Introduction
Life is filled with challenges, struggles, and unexpected trials. No one is exempt from difficulties. As believers, we may sometimes wonder why hardships still come into our lives even when we follow God. However, the Bible teaches us that trials are not meant to destroy us—they are meant to strengthen us.
Jesus Himself told His followers:
“In the world you will have tribulation. But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
This promise reminds us that although trials are certain, victory is also certain through Christ. The question is not whether trials will come, but how we respond to them.
Today we will learn how to live above the trials of life through God’s Word.
1. Understand That Trials Are Part of the Christian Life
Many people believe that once they follow God, life should become easy. But Scripture teaches the opposite. Trials are part of spiritual growth.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” — James 1:2–3
Trials test our faith and build perseverance. Just as gold is refined by fire, our faith becomes stronger through difficulties.
Even great servants of God experienced trials:
-
Job lost his family, health, and possessions.
-
Joseph was betrayed and imprisoned.
-
Paul endured persecution and suffering.
Yet God used every trial to prepare them for greater purposes.
Lesson: Trials are not punishment; they are preparation.
2. Keep Your Focus on God, Not the Problem
One of the biggest mistakes we make during trials is focusing too much on the problem instead of focusing on God.
When Peter walked on water toward Jesus, he was able to do the impossible while his eyes were on Christ. But the moment he looked at the storm, he began to sink.
“But when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’” — Matthew 14:30
Our circumstances may look overwhelming, but when we keep our eyes on Jesus, He gives us the strength to stand.
“We walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
Faith allows us to see God’s power even when the situation looks impossible.
3. Trust That God Is Working Behind the Scenes
Sometimes we do not understand why trials happen. But God is always working, even when we cannot see it.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.” — Romans 8:28
Notice that the Bible does not say all things are good, but that God works through all things for good.
Joseph is a perfect example. His brothers sold him into slavery, he was falsely accused, and he spent years in prison. But later he told his brothers:
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” — Genesis 50:20
What looked like a disaster became God’s plan to save many lives.
Your trial may actually be God positioning you for a future blessing.
4. Strengthen Your Faith Through Prayer and God’s Word
When trials come, we must run toward God, not away from Him.
Prayer connects us to God’s strength.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” — Philippians 4:6
The Word of God also strengthens our faith.
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” — Romans 10:17
When Jesus faced temptation in the wilderness, He overcame by declaring Scripture. In the same way, God’s Word gives us power over fear, discouragement, and doubt.
5. Remember That Trials Are Temporary
One of the greatest truths in the Bible is that suffering does not last forever.
“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” — Psalm 30:5
The Apostle Paul also wrote:
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” — 2 Corinthians 4:17
Compared to the eternal glory God has prepared for us, our present struggles are temporary.
God’s promise is that every storm will eventually pass.
6. Stand Firm and Do Not Give Up
Many people lose their breakthrough because they give up too soon.
But God calls us to remain faithful.
“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9
Your victory may be closer than you think. Sometimes the darkest moment comes just before the breakthrough.
7. Remember That Christ Has Already Won the Victory
The greatest reason we can live above trials is because Jesus has already defeated sin, death, and the power of darkness.
“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 15:57
Through Christ we are not victims—we are overcomers.
“In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” — Romans 8:37
No trial can separate us from God’s love.
Conclusion
